Councilman Melvin Hasten Sr.: More Than Three Decades of Service to St. Gabriel

FacebookX TwitterPinterestLinkedInTumblrRedditVKWhatsAppEmail

The lifelong resident has combined public leadership, a long professional career and service within his faith community while representing the people of St. Gabriel since 1994.

Councilman Melvin Hasten Sr. has witnessed St. Gabriel grow, change and confront new opportunities across more than three decades of elected service.

A lifelong resident of the city, Hasten has served on the St. Gabriel City Council since 1994.

His years in office represent a sustained commitment to the community he has always called home. During that time, he has participated in decisions involving public services, infrastructure, development and the policies guiding the city’s future.

Outside municipal government, Hasten has maintained a professional career with Entergy of Gonzales since 1990 and serves as chairman of finance at Iberville Christian Center in St. Gabriel.

Together, those roles reflect a life built around responsibility, consistency and service.

A Lifelong Connection to St. Gabriel

Hasten’s relationship with St. Gabriel extends beyond public office.

He has lived in the community throughout his life, giving him a personal understanding of its neighborhoods, families and history.

Longtime residents have watched the city move through different stages of growth, including the development of municipal services, recreational facilities, public-safety resources and new infrastructure.

Serving through those changes requires balancing progress with the values and relationships that give a community its identity.

Hasten’s long tenure provides him with an institutional memory of past decisions, earlier challenges and the work that helped shape present-day St. Gabriel.

Serving on the City Council Since 1994

The St. Gabriel City Council is the municipality’s legislative body. Its members have the authority to enact ordinances and resolutions affecting the city and its residents.

Council members also consider budgets, public services, infrastructure projects, development proposals and other matters that influence residents’ daily lives.

Hasten has served in this role since 1994, making him one of the city’s most experienced elected officials.

His tenure has required him to consider both immediate community needs and decisions with long-term consequences.

A road, drainage or public-facility project may take years to plan, finance and complete. Economic-development decisions must consider potential opportunities alongside their effects on neighborhoods and city services. Budgets must balance available resources with competing priorities.

Experience does not remove the difficulty of those choices, but it can provide valuable historical context when evaluating them.

A Long Professional Career

Hasten has also worked with Entergy of Gonzales since 1990.

Maintaining a professional career over several decades while serving in elected office reflects a strong level of personal discipline and consistency.

The experience also connects him with a sector essential to homes, businesses and regional development. Reliable utility services are closely tied to public safety, economic activity and residents’ quality of life.

Although his employment and council responsibilities are separate, both require an appreciation for dependable systems, long-term planning and accountability.

Financial Leadership Through Faith

Hasten serves as chairman of finance at Iberville Christian Center in St. Gabriel.

That role adds another dimension to his community involvement.

Financial leadership within a faith organization requires trust, careful stewardship and responsibility to the congregation. It also involves helping ensure that resources are managed in support of the institution’s mission and continued service.

For Hasten, faith-community involvement creates another connection with the people and families of St. Gabriel outside the council chamber.

His official city biography confirms his council service, employment and position at Iberville Christian Center.

Experience and Institutional Memory

More than three decades in elected office provide Hasten with a long view of municipal government.

He has seen leadership change, public priorities evolve and projects move from discussion to implementation.

Institutional memory can help a governing body understand why earlier decisions were made, which approaches succeeded and where additional work may still be needed.

At the same time, every period introduces new expectations. Residents want accessible leadership, responsive services and clear communication about decisions affecting their neighborhoods.

The responsibility of an experienced council member is therefore not only to remember the past, but also to help the city respond to its present needs and future possibilities.

Continuing to Serve His Hometown

Councilman Melvin Hasten Sr.’s public-service journey is defined by longevity.

He has served St. Gabriel through elected leadership, maintained a lengthy professional career and accepted financial responsibility within his faith community.

Each role has required trust and a willingness to remain accountable to others.

At Saint Gabriel Spotlight, we believe residents should know the people serving in local government and the experiences they bring to public decisions.

For Hasten, that experience is grounded in a lifetime in St. Gabriel and more than 30 years representing its people on the City Council.
